On January 16, 2023, the BCCI conducted a bid process to select the winning bidder(s) for the media rights to the Women’s Indian Premier League’s Seasons 2023–2027. After carefully evaluating all the bids, Viacom18 Media Private Limited was chosen as the highest bidder for the consolidated Bid for the Media Rights (i.e. broadcast, digital, data and out-of-home). The BCCI is pleased to announce that Viacom18 Media Private Limited has been awarded the Media Rights for the Women’s Indian Premier League’s Seasons 2023–2027.
Viacom18 Media Private Limited has purchased the Media Rights for WIPL Seasons 2023 through 2027 for a total of INR 951 crores (or INR 7.09 crores per match). This includes rights to both Global Digital Rights and Global Televisions Rights. For this bid process, BCCI had its legal counsel from Argus Partners and all the requirements outlined in the ITT were fulfilled. Before the purchase was made, conclusive paperwork was signed, and all formalities were followed to BCCI’s specifications.
BCCI President Roger Binny congratulated Viacom18 for winning the media rights for Women’s IPL for a period of five years. He remarked that the recent bilateral series against Australia is a proof of how popular women’s cricket is in India. Women’s cricket has been on a steady growth for a few years and having an exclusive T20 competition for them would provide more entertainment for the fans. This move is likely to take the women’s cricket to another level in the country.
Jay Shah, BCCI Honorary Secretary, expressed his enthusiasm for the league, saying “I am really excited that we have had such an encouraging response for a league that will revolutionise women’s cricket not just in India but across the globe”. This league has the potential to create a more equitable and accessible platform for women’s cricket in India, and across the world. It is an exciting time for the sport, and I wish the BCCI the best of luck with the inaugural Women’s IPL.
I committed to the Board and our female cricket players to make significant progress and today we have achieved it. The broadcasters are key in broadening the reach of the game, and their backing of the Women’s Indian Premier League is an evident proof that the league is on the right track. Each game has been priced at Rs 7.
There has never before been a registration for 09 crore for a women’s game. With a combined bid of INR 951 crores, I congratulate the successful bidder on gaining the TV and digital rights and extend my warm welcome to them. The road to create a professional women’s cricket league has officially begun, and when the five franchises are revealed this month, we will make another significant step towards achieving this goal.
Mr. Arun Singh Dhumal, Head of the IPL Governing Council, expressed his delight in welcoming Viacom18 as the official digital and television broadcaster for the Women’s IPL. Viacom18 has agreed to a five-year commitment of INR 951 crores, or INR 7.09 crores for each match from 2023 to 2027.
